Compatibility Challenges in Pipeline Coating
Pipeline coating systems are designed as integrated units — but in practice, the mill-applied coating and the field-applied joint coating often come from different suppliers. This creates compatibility risks that can compromise the entire pipeline integrity.
- Adhesion failure — Poor bonding between field coating and mill coating leads to disbondment and crevice corrosion at the overlap area.
- Chemical incompatibility — Different material chemistries may react or fail to bond, especially with FBE and polyolefin systems.

Our Solution: Tested, Compatible Field Coating Systems
Jiayu’s anti-corrosion products are engineered and tested for compatibility with all major pipeline mill coating systems. We understand that each coating type has specific surface energy, chemistry, and bonding requirements — and our products are formulated accordingly.
Compatibility Coverage
- 3LPE (Three-Layer Polyethylene) — Our heat shrinkable sleeves and tapes are formulated to bond securely with the PE outer layer of 3LPE coatings. The hot-melt adhesive chemistry is matched to PE surface properties for reliable adhesion at the overlap.
- FBE (Fusion Bonded Epoxy) — Our solvent-free epoxy primer creates a compatible bonding interface between the FBE coating and the field-applied heat shrink sleeve or cold-applied tape.
- 2LPE (Two-Layer Polyethylene) — Our cold-applied tapes and heat shrink sleeves are suitable for 2LPE systems, with the same adhesive compatibility as for 3LPE.
- Liquid Epoxy Coatings — Our visco-elastic systems and repair patches are compatible with liquid epoxy field coatings, providing reliable repair and protection.
- Coal Tar and Asphalt Coatings — For older pipelines, our visco-elastic tape offers a compatible repair solution that can be applied directly over these legacy coatings.
How We Ensure Compatibility
- Adhesive formulation matching — Hot-melt adhesives are formulated to bond with polyolefin, epoxy, and other common mill coating materials.
- Primer selection — Our solvent-free epoxy primers provide the ideal bonding bridge between steel and field coatings while also being compatible with the mill coating chemistry.
- Third-party testing — Peel strength testing (to steel and to mill coating) is performed per ISO 21809-3 to verify adhesion performance.
- Material-specific recommendations — We provide product recommendations based on the specific mill coating type and operating conditions of each project.
Standards Compliance
Our compatibility testing and product performance comply with ISO 21809-3, GB/T 23257, and NACE SP0109 standards. Third-party test reports for peel strength and cathodic disbondment are available upon request.
