Radiation Cross-linked Polyethylene Pressure Sensitive Heat Shrinkable Tape
Product Highlights
Product Description
Radiation Cross-Linked Polyethylene Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Heat Shrinkable Tape is manufactured by coating a modified polyisobutylene (PIB) pressure-sensitive adhesive onto a radiation cross-linked polyethylene backing. When heated, the tape shrinks tightly around the pipe, forming a complete anti-corrosion system. The pressure-sensitive adhesive provides instant bonding without the need for separate primer or heat activation for adhesion — simply apply and heat to shrink.
The radiation cross-linked backing offers high mechanical strength, excellent durability, and resistance to corrosion, aging, and environmental stress cracking. The modified PIB adhesive remains permanently flexible, providing long-term sealing performance.
Recommended Applications
- Field joint coating in water-logged areas and swampy terrain
- Pipeline corrosion protection in mountain tunnels and underwater tunnels
- External coating repair for pipelines in highly corrosive environments
- As an outer protective wrap for visco-elastic systems
- In-service pipeline repair and rehabilitation
- Field joint coating where primer application is difficult or undesirable
System Composition
The pressure-sensitive adhesive heat shrinkable tape can be used as a standalone anti-corrosion system or as a protective outer wrap.
- Standalone use: Applied directly to the prepared steel surface. No primer is required — the pressure-sensitive adhesive bonds instantly upon contact and heat shrinking.
- As an outer protective wrap for visco-elastic systems: Applied over visco-elastic tape to provide additional mechanical protection and UV shielding for exposed valves, flanges, and fittings.

Installation Guide & Precautions
Installation Methods
The pressure-sensitive adhesive heat shrinkable tape is applied using a propane torch or heat gun. Unlike standard heat shrinkable tapes, this tape requires no separate primer — the pressure-sensitive adhesive bonds instantly upon contact and heat shrinking.
Quick Installation Steps (Standalone Use)
- Surface preparation: Clean and blast the weld area to Sa2.5 (or St3 if blasting is not feasible). Remove all moisture, oil, and contaminants.
- Pipe preheating: Preheat the pipe around the weld to remove surface moisture. Excessive preheating is not required.
- Position the tape: Wrap the tape around the prepared weld area with a minimum 100mm overlap at the lap joint. The pressure-sensitive adhesive will bond on contact.
- Install fixing strip: Secure the overlap seam with the provided fixing strip or by spot-heating the tape edge.
- Heat shrinking: Using a propane torch, heat the tape evenly from the center outward. Shrink the tape until the adhesive flows out slightly at both ends, ensuring a complete seal.
- Final inspection: Check for smooth coverage, no bubbles, wrinkles, or lifted edges.
Quick Installation Steps (As Outer Wrap for Visco-Elastic Tape)
- Apply visco-elastic tape to the flange, valve, or irregular surface following standard procedures.
- Immediately wrap the pressure-sensitive adhesive heat shrinkable tape over the visco-elastic tape with 55% minimum overlap.
- Heat the tape evenly to shrink and bond it to the visco-elastic tape layer.
- Press the tape ends firmly to prevent lifting.
Key Reminders
- No primer needed — the pressure-sensitive adhesive eliminates the need for primer application, simplifying installation.
- Do not overheat — excessive heat can burn the backing or degrade the adhesive. Keep the torch moving at all times.
- Shrink from the center — this prevents air entrapment and ensures a smooth finish.
- Overlap is critical — a minimum 100mm overlap is essential for sealing integrity.
- Ideal for wet or humid conditions — the pressure-sensitive adhesive performs well in environments where primer application is difficult.
- Storage: Keep in original packaging in a dry, cool area below 35°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
