Product Description

Radiation Cross-Linked Polyethylene Heat Shrinkable Tape (Lap Joint) is manufactured by laminating a specialized hot-melt adhesive onto a radiation cross-linked polyethylene backing. Compared to ordinary polyethylene, the radiation cross-linked backing offers higher mechanical strength, longer service life, and superior resistance to corrosion, aging, and environmental stress cracking. The hot-melt adhesive provides strong bonding and excellent sealing performance. The product is fully compatible with 2-layer polyethylene (2LPE), 3-layer polyethylene (3LPE), FBE, and 2FBE coating systems.

  • Field joint coating for oil and gas pipelines
  • Weld seam corrosion protection for steel pipelines
  • Pipe repair and damage patching
  • Elbow and bend wrapping for irregular pipe fittings
  • Joint coating for petrochemical, power, metallurgy, and water supply pipelines

System Composition

The heat shrinkable tape (lap joint) is used as the primary anti-corrosion layer for pipeline field joints. For optimal performance, it should be applied over a solvent-free epoxy primer.

  • Solvent-Free Epoxy Primer (JY-308): Applied to the prepared weld area to enhance adhesion and provide additional corrosion protection to the steel substrate.
  • Heat Shrinkable Tape (Lap Joint) (JY-301): Wrapped around the primed weld area and heated to shrink tightly, forming a seamless, high-strength anti-corrosion seal.

Installation Guide & Precautions

Installation Methods

The heat shrinkable tape (lap joint) is applied using a propane torch or heat gun. Shrinking requires even heating to ensure proper adhesion and a void-free seal. The tape can be installed manually or with mechanical assistance for large-diameter pipes.

Quick Installation Steps

  1. Surface preparation: Clean and blast the weld area to Sa2.5. Grind smooth any weld irregularities, sharp edges, or protrusions.
  2. Pipe preheating: Preheat the pipe around the weld to 75°C-85°C (or as specified by the primer manufacturer).
  3. Primer application: Apply solvent-free epoxy primer evenly to the prepared weld area. Ensure full coverage without missing spots.
  4. Position the tape: Wrap the heat shrinkable tape around the primed weld area with a minimum 100mm overlap at the lap joint. For sheet form, position the sheet with the required longitudinal overlap.
  5. Install fixing strip: Secure the overlap seam with the provided fixing strip or by spot-heating the tape edge.
  6. Heat shrinking: Using a propane torch, heat the tape evenly from the center outward. Shrink the tape until the adhesive flows out slightly at both ends, ensuring a complete seal.
  7. Final inspection: Check for smooth coverage, no bubbles, wrinkles, or lifted edges. Ensure the tape is fully adhered to the pipe and to the adjacent pipe coating.

Key Reminders

  • Do not overheat — excessive heat can burn the backing. Keep the torch moving at all times.
  • Shrink from the center — this prevents air entrapment and ensures a smooth, bubble-free finish.
  • Overlap is critical — a minimum 100mm overlap (or as specified by project requirements) is essential for sealing integrity.
  • Primer must be applied — the heat shrinkable tape is not self-adhesive and requires a primer for proper adhesion to steel.
  • Compatibility — this tape is designed for use on steel pipes with 2LPE, 3LPE, FBE, or 2FBE coating systems.
  • Storage: Keep in original packaging in a dry, cool area below 35°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
